On October 29 and 30, we hosted a hackathon at our Porto office and invited engineering students to contribute to open-source Hacktoberfest repositories.

Hacktoberfest is a month-long global celebration of open source software run by DigitalOcean in partnership with Intel, AppWrite, and DeepSource, with a strong focus on encouraging contributions to open source projects.

During these two days, the participants teamed up with our engineers while learning and sharing their knowledge about tech. Our Head of Engineering, Simão Belchior, conducted a presentation about open-source, collaborative innovation, and git. On the second day, João Bandeira, Switch’s Head of Product, stepped in to talk about his experience on the challenges of building a payments platform in a product-centric fintech company.

It surely was a weekend full of pretzels, data lakes, tech talks, and pull requests. In the end, the SWITCHEROOS, a team of students from Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto, took the prize of this hackathon, and are heading to Munich next month.

We’re looking forward to the next Hacktoberfest in 2022. In the meantime, follow our upcoming events here.
